Salesforce and Anthropic Announce Claudeforce: Claude Becomes the Default Model as Its Retail Referral Traffic Surges

A close read of the August 26, 2026 Claudeforce announcement against quarterly AI referral data: how AI traffic sources shifted across the Top 1000 retailers, why the partnership stops short of the commerce layer, and what merchants should track.

Key Takeaways

  1. Salesforce and Anthropic announced Claudeforce on August 26, 2026, making Claude the default model across Slack, Agentforce Coworker, and the new Salesforce in Claude plugin
  2. The announcement landed in a quarter when Claude went from being the top AI referral source for 1 of the Top 1000 online retailers to 15, while ChatGPT was the only engine to lose ground
  3. The partnership covers sales and internal work, not the commerce layer: catalog and checkout connectivity is still decided by ACP and UCP

What Claudeforce actually settles

On August 26, 2026, Salesforce and Anthropic announced an expanded partnership called Claudeforce. The timing was deliberate: it came immediately before Salesforce reported quarterly earnings.

The first thing shipping is a plugin called Salesforce in Claude. It carries 37 prebuilt sales skills, covering meeting prep, deal health review, and pipeline review, letting sellers reason over live revenue context inside Claude and route approved actions back through Salesforce business rules. It is available to select pilot customers today, with open beta expected in September 2026 and additional skills starting to launch in late 2026.

Underneath sits AIforce, a harness that exposes business data and workflows to any agent through MCP servers, APIs, and CLI tools. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the tool-connection standard Anthropic published, and it has become the de facto common layer. The route from another company's business data to Anthropic's own model runs over rails Anthropic laid in the open.

The detail that gets overlooked is that Claude is not one option among several here. It is installed as the default: Slack AI, Slackbot, Salesforce in Claude, Headless 360, Agentforce Coworker, and Claude Code across Salesforce's engineering organization. Anthropic reciprocates by naming Salesforce its preferred CRM and Slack its preferred internal collaboration platform, making each company a customer of the other.

The quarter Claude posted its biggest retail gain

To understand the timing, you need the data behind the AI Commerce Rankings that Digital Commerce 360 publishes with ReFiBuy. For each of the Top 1000 North American online retailers, it identifies which engine supplies the largest share of that retailer's AI-driven traffic, and counts the results quarterly.

AI referral sourceQ1 2026Q2 2026Change
ChatGPT (OpenAI)844 retailers722 retailersDown 122
Gemini (Google)16 retailers32 retailersUp 16
Perplexity8 retailers21 retailersUp 13
Claude (Anthropic)1 retailer15 retailersUp 14

Read the numbers carefully. These are not traffic volumes but counts of retailers for whom a given engine is the single largest AI referral source. ChatGPT remains dominant at 722. Still, of the four engines, it was the only one to lose share in Q2.

Claude's move from 1 to 15 looks small in absolute terms. In rate of change it was the largest of the four, and it started from effectively zero. Anthropic is a company that has not publicly built consumer shopping features, which makes movement of this kind worth noting.

The rankings measure four signals: whether AI agents can read a retailer's catalog data, the share of site traffic coming from AI sources, the diversity of those sources, and 90-day momentum. The presence of source diversity as a scored signal is itself evidence that the industry now treats single-engine optimization as a risk.

This partnership is not about the commerce layer

This is the point worth pressing. It is tempting to read Claudeforce as the side that recommends products connecting to the side that holds orders and customer data. Read the announcement literally, though, and what connects is sales and internal work.

LayerHow Claudeforce covers it
Sales (Sales Cloud)Salesforce in Claude ships 37 prebuilt skills. Currently in pilot
Internal collaboration (Slack)Claude is the default model for Slack and powers Slackbot
Agent platform (Agentforce)Available as a reasoning model for the Atlas Reasoning Engine. Agentforce Coworker runs on Claude by default
EngineeringClaude Code adopted across Salesforce's engineering organization
Commerce (Agentforce Commerce)Not mentioned in the announcement. Catalog and checkout connectivity still runs through ACP and UCP
Pricing and packagingNot disclosed. The announcement states pricing and packaging are subject to change

Agentforce Commerce, the commerce side of Salesforce, does not appear in the announcement at all. Its connections were already decided elsewhere: ACP, co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe for ChatGPT, and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) plus the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). Salesforce's own blog describes UCP integration as what lets merchants sell on emerging channels like Gemini.

It also matters that Anthropic has no comparable checkout surface. Project Deal, published in April 2026, had 69 employees let AI agents negotiate on their behalf in a mock marketplace, producing 186 completed deals worth more than $4,000 in total. DC360 read the experiment as evidence of priorities different from the consumer checkout work at OpenAI and Google. Claude is growing as a source of traffic to retail sites, but it does not yet own a surface where the transaction completes.

The numbers, and the temperature outside them

Salesforce reported fiscal Q2 2027 revenue of roughly $11.35 billion, up 11% year over year. Agentforce and Data 360 annual recurring revenue reached about $3.9 billion, up 210%, with Agentforce alone above $1.5 billion and up 240%, according to the earnings coverage. Chief operating and financial officer Robin Washington said MCP and API usage grew significantly during the quarter.

Benioff's language on the call carried an edge.

This nonsense of this SaaSpocalypse, I think it's time for it to stop.

Outside views are less uniform. In a TD Cowen survey of global Salesforce partners published just before earnings, not one respondent said Agentforce had driven recent bookings. 11% reported minimal immediate customer interest, 56% expected interest to arrive once the product matures, and 33% saw enough buying and trial activity to notice. That is nearly two years after Agentforce launched and after it passed $1 billion in ARR.

Rising interest and realized return are different things, and that distinction applies to how merchants should read this announcement too. A swapped default model does not automatically connect anything to your revenue path.

What merchants should watch

Three practical points follow for anyone handling revenue that arrives through AI channels.

First, assume AI referral sources reshuffle quarterly. A setup built around ChatGPT alone looks fragile against a single quarter in which 122 retailers changed their leading source. Keeping catalog data readable by any agent buys more resilience than tuning for one engine. The entry points to agentic commerce are not settled.

Second, measurement. Claudeforce pushing AI-derived context into CRM and Slack does raise the resolution of customer data. But separating which engine sent the visit and where it turned into revenue is work only the merchant can do. When the referrer is an AI chat surface, conventional source classification quietly drops the signal.

Third, the commerce connection gets decided on the protocol side. The coverage of ACP and UCP, and whether Anthropic builds a checkout surface of its own, will move merchant revenue more directly than follow-ups to Claudeforce. Track them as a separate axis.

Conclusion

Claudeforce laid the groundwork for Claude to reach enterprise business data. The picture where the recommending surface and the order-owning surface share one foundation is not finished.

Three things to watch next: how far the September open beta extends beyond sales skills, whether the additional skills arriving in late 2026 include anything on the commerce side, and whether Anthropic steps into completing transactions itself. Merchants already seeing traffic from Claude will make faster calls next quarter if they set up measurement for it now.
